The article “Fix other things before adding school days” by
David DeMatthews, appeared in the San Antonio Express-News on February 25, 2019. The author’s intended audience
are parents and lawmakers, and the legislature. The author believes that paying
close attention to funding inequities between high- and low-poverty districts, adding
more pay to teachers, and having counselors in schools, can cause a few issues for
financing public schools, but he also explains that adding more school days in
Texas can make more issues for the Texas legislature and the school boards. The
argument of this article is that it is better to try to fix the problems that
there are on funding for schools, then trying to add more school days for
students. I agree with this article because the Texas legislature needs to
focus more on fixing public funding for teachers than on trying to give kids
more school days. And they also need to focus on student health and on how much
they already do in school. The person who wrote the article is David
DeMatthews. He is the director of the Texas Principal Leadership Academy and
an associate professor of educational leadership and policy at the University
of Texas at Austin. These achievements indicate that he has high credibility.
In addition, Professor DeMatthews has also recently authored a book, Community Engaged Leadership for Social
Justice: A Critical Approach in Urban Schools with Routledge. He seems to
be a smart man with high credentials. Professor DeMatthews does not only give
evidence about the public school funding system, he also gives examples. For instance, he says “the average teacher
salary in Texas is $ 53,167, which is more than $ 7.000 less than national
average of $60,483.”
